Our History

1975

Founded

In 1975, Tor Coatings was founded by three colleagues: Alan Turner, Gordon Carr and Guy Readman. Translating to 'the peak’ or ’the epitome’, the name Tor captured the essence of the company’s aspiration of becoming the best in the field of coating systems.

Late 1970s

Introduced fire protection systems

Once established, the company’s initial focus was on anti-graffiti systems. This quickly took Tor Coatings into the emerging communal area coatings market, providing protection in tower blocks with high performance systems that hold back the spread of flame in corridors and stairwells.

1980s

Introduced waterproofing systems

In the 1980s, Tor Coatings moved into the waterproofing market when they introduced a range of innovative liquid-applied roof and balcony systems.

1990s

Introduced cladding systems

In the 1990s, Tor Coatings added cladding systems to their portfolio along with a wide range of protective and industrial coatings.

2007

Acquired by Rustoleum

Tor Coatings enjoyed significant growth and soon became the largest specialist coatings manufacturer in the UK. This came to the attention of Rustoleum Europe, part of RPM Incorporated, who completed the purchase of Tor Coatings from the management team in 2007. The acquisition provided a backbone of investment and new products for the company, further boosting their offering. With the introduction of the Rustoleum consumer and merchant brands, including Zinsser, Blackfriars and Bolloms, Tor Coatings has continued to exhibit exceptional growth.

2019

Reached £63 million turnover

By 2019, the turnover has reached £63 million, with Rustoleum Europe at $215m and RPM at $5.6bn. Investment in Tor Coating this year has totalled over £27 million, with a brand new purpose built distribution centre and head office, the introduction of SAP and the commissioning of a new aerosol filling line.
